A lot of potential health problems are associated with alcohol, including aggravation of allergic symptoms in some individuals. Studies have revealed that consumption of alcohol plays a key role in how allergies affect an individual. For instance, while asthma may be a general allergic condition, the symptoms can be aggravated, if an individual adds a daily intake of alcohol to the equation. This aggravation of symptoms can be attributed to two key ingredients found in alcohol, histamines and sulfites.
Histamines are commonly found in red wine and they are known to trigger asthma, difficulty in breathing, heartburn, etc. Likewise, red wine contains sulfites which may cause itchy skin, nasal swelling, and hay fever like symptoms. On the same line, if after drinking alcohol, an individual experiences discomfort in the form of hives, stomach cramps, or any other unusual symptoms, they might have one of the following conditions:
Allergy symptoms worsened by alcohol
As researchers are figuring out the complex relationship between allergic reactions and alcohol, a past report cited by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI) found a link between high levels of alcohol consumption and increased IgE levels. IgE is an antibody, and an indicator of the presence of allergies in an individual.
The research however, did not suggest that alcohol caused allergies. The research data indicated that alcohol interacted with a component that involved the body’s response to allergy. Dr. Phil Lieberman, a spokesperson for AAAAI, said that other studies have indicated links between drinking alcohol and a list of allergy symptoms like headaches, asthma, itching, nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing, nasal discharge, and hives.
According to a study carried out on elderly people with asthma, over 40 percent participants shared that drinking alcohol evoked allergy or allergy-like symptoms in them. Also, around 30-35 percent participants shared that consuming alcohol made their asthma worse. Drinking alcohol can also worsen the conditions of people suffering from hives. Apart from the ingredients found in alcohol, even certain alcohol processing techniques can trigger allergic reactions in some individuals.
Is alcohol itself the problem?
Usually, a genuine case of alcohol allergy is very specific and rare. In fact, the problem lies not in alcohol itself. As mentioned earlier in the article, compounds such as histamine and sulfites, commonly found in beer, wine, and hard liquor are the chemicals that trigger the allergy symptoms and often aggravate the condition. People allergic to alcohol can develop the following symptoms even after consuming extremely small amounts of the substance:
While there is no simple cure for allergic reactions as a result of alcohol or for a direct allergy to alcohol, the best way to avoid these is to refrain from taking alcohol at all. Alcohol is an addictive substance that leads to tolerance, dependence, and addiction in the long run.
